Introduction

In September, 2009, ATI launched the 5800 series GPUs that delivered not only DirectX11 Gaming but also a multi-display solution with the introduction of ATI's Eyefinity Technology.  Through ATI's Eyefinity, immersive gaming  has taken a large leap forward, enabling gamers to play ultra-high resolution multi-display game modes and gives them an edge over their competitors in online matches. With over 16 Million Eyefinity-capable GPUs sold, ATI now enjoys 51.1% of the discrete GPU market share and holds strong in their position because of smart and aggressive price positioning from top to bottom in the DX11 GPU market.

Although Eyefinity in itself is economically sound, having the ability to span the display to more than 2 monitors on a single card, the requirements needed for a third display still hamper its viability as a solution.  An average 5000 series card has four connectors but only two of those can be connected directly to the monitor.  The third connector must be a DisplayPort connector, either connected to a DisplayPort capable monitor or to a regular monitor through an ActiveDisplay port converter. This adds additional cost that is often closer to, or equal to, the price of purchasing another video card.  With ATI's constant efforts of maximizing the economic potential of their products, there is now a practical solution.

Enter the Active DisplayPort to Single-Link DVI Adapter, enabling Eyefinity on three DVI displays, for both productivity and gaming.  There have been solutions that offer similar functionality, namely one from Sapphire Technologies, but for the first time the Active DP to Single-link DVI adapter is completely plug and play, requiring no additional power source.  The Active DP to Single-Link DVI adapter is fully DPCP/HDCP compliant, offering flicker free Eyefinity gaming modes up to 1920x1200 per monitor.
