At this point, I am finding a common theme from people. They are concerned about backing up information, but, at the same time, they want to have a central point from which to stream music, movies, and photos. The Cloud is certainly the in thing for storing your backups, but others, like myself, are concerned about what companies can do with their data, or what might happen in the instance of a breach. Look at what happened with Target during Christmas time, the widespread breach of credit card data is still being felt by many, and the true size of the breach is still unknown.

That leads me to the safety of building your own system for storing backups and media. In this case, most of us would want a small form factor system that does not take up much room, but still has the power to store and stream data. With most small systems, though, you are limited to the amount of storage you can place in the system. Maybe you can only place one hard drive in the enclosure, but want to run a RAID 1 setup for data redundancy. I know I would if I was using this for backup.

The ICY DOCK MB992SK-B is a SATA backplane cage that offers solid aluminum construction that not only protects the hard drives but provides passive cooling. The MB992SK-B is setup with two locking drive bays that will fit 2.5” SSDs or HDDs. The case fits into the space of an external 3.5” drive bay, allowing you to run RAID 0 or RAID 1 configurations in a limited amount of space. Both drives in this case are powered from a single 15-Pin SATA cable and individual SATA data cables. The drive enclosure also has EMI shielding to protect the installed drive and anti-vibration technology.
