Thirty or so years makes quite a difference in things. What was completely acceptable, and a social norm at one time, can go on to be a much loathed practice very quickly. Smoking is a great example of this. Growing up, basically every adult I knew smoked, and very few non-smokers went into tirades when someone lit up around them. Television and print were filled with ads for tobacco companies. Even Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble were doing their best to hawk Winstons. Don’t get me wrong, I totally understand just how poor the judgment was in making cigarette ads with beloved children’s characters, and I certainly did not condone it. We lost some very creative ad making along the way, however. Frankly, I’m not sure any of the ads were in worse taste than the graphic internal depictions of smokers’ bodies being aired today. I guess that cigarette ads have come a long way, baby….
I never really understood Virginia Slims’ “you’ve come a long way, baby” campaign. A long way to what, exactly? A long way to having tobacco companies see you as a target market? You certainly don’t have to go a very long way for that since just about any company (tobacco or not) will try to see anything as a target market. Face it, if Conglomerate, Inc. could find a way to successfully market carcinogenic F-22 flight helmets for dogs, they would. When I think of “coming a long way”, I might be more apt to think of a small company making vanilla, necessity type storage peripherals, who gets a pulse on consumers’ needs and progresses to manufacturing rock solid, innovative storage solutions for the mainstream. In that case, Icy Dock has come a very long way.
Icy Dock is doing things the right way again with the new Blizzard 3.5” Extrenal HDD Enclosure. External HDD Enclosures are simple items, but the Icy Dock Blizzard enclosure takes all of the features one step further and couples that with outstanding build quality and engineering. On the performance end, the Blizzard offers USB 3.0/2.0 and eSATA connectivity to go along with 6Gb/s compatibility to get the most speed from your hard drive, but Icy Dock also adds a very interesting feature set. The Icy Dock Blizzard uses an 80mm fan with active cooling to keep your drive running cool. The fan features selectable high and low speeds, as well as an automatic setting which keeps the fan running at the optimal speed to cool the drive while remaining silent. The front of the Blizzard houses the fan, and features a low light blue LED which changes color to red to alert you should the drive reach fifty degrees Celsius. The brightness of the LED can be tailored to your liking with a continuously variable knob located on the back of the Blizzard. HDD installation in the Blizzard is completely tool free, and can literally be accomplished in seconds. The Blizzard also comes complete with USB 3.0/2.0 and eSATA cables, as well as a power supply.
