To put it simply, a geometric mean differs from the arithmetic mean by the way it is calculated. An average mean is calculated by dividing the total sum of all the numbers in a set with the set number count (4 + 8 = 12 / 2 = 6, 6 is the arithmetic mean), while the geometric mean is calculated by taking the nth root of the numbers multiplied in a set (4 x 8 = 32, square root of 32 = 5.65..). The geometric mean fixes the aggregate score imbalance that is present when comparing figures from devices that do not share the same features and comparing components of different magnitudes. The geometric mean will be always lower than the arithmetic mean; therefore aggregate scores from Sandra 2011 are not comparable with older versions of Sandra.
