Introduction

I’m typically pretty critical of input devices, whether it be a mouse, trackball (yeah, they actually still do make those things) or keyboard, just as everyone should be. It is your interface to the computer, and the parts you have the most contact with. The comfort level of your experience does a lot in defining the entire experience. Put a cheap feeling, jittery mouse with a sticking ball on the highest end computer and it’s going to be a really lousy experience for the user. Same goes for a keyboard with a sticking key, or a key that needs to be struck “just right” three or four times before it works. It makes no difference how powerful the computer, being unable to get your input in easily may be the single most frustrating experience a user can have.

This spans all types of usage. Gamers will, of course, argue that they require a much higher level of precision than the average user and that they have a much higher need for macros, and for the most part they are correct. There are exceptions in the graphics/video field where precision is of utmost importance. Anyone who has ever had an uncooperative mouse while trying to select a single pixel in Photoshop (or any graphics app) will certainly understand. But what about the admin who can take work to a whole new level of speed and ease using macros in productivity apps? Everyone knows that you do not want to be in an office with an admin with a jittery mouse. Nothing will compare with the anger and frustration you will see.
