Noctua NF-F12 PWM Fan Review

We take things for granted on a daily basis when we're younger, and it isn’t until we're adults that we learn to appreciate things the way we should. When we're children we take everything for granted, like the clothes on our backs and the food we eat. When we become teenagers, we have learned a little, although admittedly not enough, and we take our parents and their concerns for our well being for granted and get it confused with them just being meddlesome. Even having a job as a teenager can be taken for granted, not taking into consideration the life lessons we learn like punctuality, responsibility and being held accountable for our actions. As a parent, the biggest thing I learned is that I took silence for granted.

Have you ever heard the saying “Silence is golden”? Well, if you haven’t and you have just had your first child, you will certainly gain a whole new perspective on silence, or the lack of it. Computers aren’t the quietest machines around, with all the fans blowing copious amounts of air through your chassis. Depending on your case size or air cooler, liquid cooled system, all the fans we have setup, they all give off some amount of noise. The downside to all the different fans we have in our systems is the frequency of the sound the fans give off. Have you ever played a game and the system is fairly quiet, then all of a sudden you start to hear that high pitched fan on the GPU wind up? How about all the system fans or CPU fan revving up and down as it's being controlled by the PWM settings of the fan or motherboard?

Noctua is a very well-known company that produces some top notch fans, with some very impressive cooling capabilities at near silent decibels, compared to other fans on the market. The NF-F12 is Noctua’s first venture into a PWM fan, not because they never saw a need for one, but simply because they wanted to do it right and on their own terms. Noctua’s NF-F12 implements a new PWM IC with SCD (Smooth Communication Drive). The NE-FD1 PWM IC basically gives smoother torque impulses giving you a quieter fan at lower speeds. The NF-F12 also runs at a mere 0.6w @ 0.05 amps, making it a very power efficient fan for those who would like to go green.
