Noctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler Review

Article Index

No matter what record is broken or what new height achieved, there will be an old timer who will compare it unfavorably to a legend. When Hank Aaron broke the all-time home run record, to many he was still “no Babe Ruth”. But, how could that be? He broke Ruth’s record, obviously he must be better. Was it simply the legend of Ruth that made people feel this way? Was it a looking back through rose colored glasses? Or was it something else?

In this case, it was something else aiding it along. Ruth was a legend and had great counting stats, but what truly made him a legend was exactly how much better he was than the other players of his time. Aaron was a great player and eventually hit more home runs than Ruth…but he never hit more home runs in a season than entire other teams. Ruth did. He was just elevated so far beyond his competition that he appeared superhuman. It wasn’t rose colored glasses, Ruth actually was that good. The Noctua NH-D14 has a similar legacy. On its release, the world had never seen anything like it, or like its performance. It took years before it saw serious competition as the top performing CPU cooler on the market. No one could question or deny it; the NH-D14 was the one. It was, and still is, a legend. Times and needs change and grow, however, and we are now seeing the legend reinvented in the form of the NH-D15.

 Noctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler

The Noctua NH-D15 is more than simply a D14 revision, it has an absolute personality and features all its own. While looking to improve on cooling, the Noctua NH-D15 also offers increased compatibility that we have not seen from any large dual tower to date. By implementing a cut out in the tower, the NH-D15 can accommodate RAM up to 64mm in height in all slots. The mass is displaced by making the NH-D15 slightly wider, which not only offers more surface area, but also allows for more even heat distribution and better dissipation from the six 6mm heat pipes. The NH-D15 also features two 140mm 1500rpm PWM fans capable of 82 CFM at an astoundingly low 24.6 dB. An included low noise adapter caps fan speeds at 1200rpm for operation with a max of 19.6 dB. The NH-D15 retains the industry leading SecuFirm 2 mounting kit, for intuitive, simple and solid installation. Noctua includes the only tool required for installation as well as a tube of top quality NT-H1 thermal compound, and backs the NH-D15 with a 6-year warranty.
