Reviewer's Opinion
The CM Storm Sonuz is a unique analog headset designed by Cooler Master, not just as a gaming device but for multi-purpose use as well. Priced at 69.99 MSRP, there is plenty of competition for the CM Storm Sonuz in that segment but it manages to differentiate itself from the rest with certain design aspects we have come to expect from a CM Storm product. The cables are braided and have anti-fraying protection for extra durability and portability. Despite having an outer shell of mostly plastic construction, the CM Storm Sonuz is heavy on the sides, mostly because of the 53mm drivers and the massive 97mm earpads. The ear pads are removable for cleaning so dirt and gunk that has accumulated overtime does not affect performance. Unlike the CM Storm Sirus, the CM Storm Sonuz’ microphone can be placed on either left or right ear, making it convenient for demanding users. Those who prefer to use the Sonuz strictly as a headphone can also just remove the microphone completely and place the included port plug.
In terms of performance, the audio playback quality is excellent whether gaming or watching movies. The bass is rich and does not rely on any artificial boosting from software. Make sure to fit the headset properly though as the heavy sides can get uncomfortable overtime if the top head support is not positioned optimally. External noise is not isolated as well compared to Circumaural headsets with complete ear coverage nor are people in your surrounding vicinity isolated from the sound you are listening to. As for recording capability, the microphone picks up voice clearly enough although the volume requires some boost to be perfectly audible or else the volume is really low. The microphone is also sensitive to movement and background noise so I suggest making sure that there are no obstructions when in use or simply place it on the other side, away from the inline remote control to minimize movement.
Overall the CM Storm Sonuz is a sizeable headset that is flexible in function, not simply limited to gaming but multimedia use as well. The inline remote and detachable microphone makes it very convenient to use while in front of the computer or attached to a mobile device listening to music. The build quality is also excellent as we have come to expect from a CM Storm product equipped with anti-fray braided cables as well as gold-plated connectors for durability, reliability and portability. While the CM Storm Sonuz is good, the competition within its price range is fierce. E-Sports have had significant growth over the years and gamers have been very particular with the type of headset they use. If only the CM Storm Sonuz’ microphone performed much better and if the fit was more comfortable, I would not have hesitated to give it our Editor’s Choice award given the excellent build quality and decent sound performance.
