Multi-GPU technology allows for a flexible upgrade option for gamers and boosts framerate performance beyond the capabilities of a single GPU configuration. Hardcore enthusiasts know full well how efficient and effective the latest generation is when it comes to performance scaling compared to previous designs. Both NVIDIA and AMD have their own version of this technology but unfortunately, multi-GPU configuration using NVIDIA's video cards on AMD systems was not possible due to licensing issues. While AMD's video cards can be configured in CrossFireX mode on any Intel or AMD platform, NVIDIA's SLI technology required the use of a custom chipset in order to run on AMD's motherboards. That is of course until the 9-series chipset arrived in Q2 2011 and NVIDIA announced full compatibility with AMD’s latest FX enthusiast platform.
Paul chats with Tom Petersen, Director of Technical Marketing for NVIDIA to discuss SLI technology and the challenges involved in making this technology work on platforms designed by NVIDIA’s main GPU competitor. Hear Tom's answers to most of the questions that enthusiasts are looking for in terms of NVIDIA's take on AMD's latest FX platform and processor technology.
