Microsoft Cancels 'Metro' Name to Diffuse Legal Action

Microsoft

Microsoft is planning on dropping 'Metro' name from the new Windows UI. The brisk turnabout complies with rumors that the German retail giant Metro AG has been considering legal action, should Microsoft continue.

As of Thursday, Microsoft had sent messages to employees that they will now be referring to the new user interface design as a "Windows 8-style UI" and a "New User Interface" rather than the Metro name.

Still the same Metro UI just a new name.

A brief comment from Microsoft refers that, the 'Metro' style was primarily a codename prior to the Windows 8 launch and at this time are apparent attempting to diffuse an unnecessary legal and courtroom battle.

Microsoft says: "We have used 'Metro style' as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines. As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog we will use our commercial names."

Meanwhile Microsoft says no more Metro talk.

Still the same Metro UI, just a new name.

For now it's "Windows 8-style UI" when talking about Windows 8 applications, and "New User Interface" when talking about the company's full product line-up.

Windows 8 has already Surfaced August 1st for OEMs, and is still on track for its official release in October.
