Latest Apple Patents Suggest Portable Heads Up Display

Could Apple be eye-ing it's own portable heads up display and give Google Glass some competition? Sure looks that way, with a patent filed by Apple yesterday, that increases the resolution of a display without increasing the number of pixels.

"In particular, a portable heads-up display may be size and weight constrained such that addition of physical pixels may not be practical," Apple wrote in the filing. "Conventionally, fewer physical pixels may mean lower cost to manufacture, lower weight, smaller size, but also lower resolution."

Simply put, this would allow an increase in the resolution on small screen that would be very lightweight and would not cost much to manufacture.

Apparently this patent also follows a previous one published earlier this month titled "Peripheral treatment for head-mounted displays. As the title suggests, it would project an image that would be viewable by the user.

Sources like the AppleInsider have reported that any commercial use of the technology is unlikely to happen any time soon, since Apple often applies for patents that do not end up being actual products.

CNET reported earlier that Apple may also be looking into the iPhone as a game controller, while IGN noted that another Apple patent published yesterday was for the next-gen iPhone that could be capable to function as an NFC-capable device.
