Introduction
As a kid, I was constantly reminded by my parents to keep quiet and always told that children should be seen and not heard. This actually affected me in several ways during my adolescent years. Subconsciously, I fought back, interrupting conversations to get heard and trying to get my point across to whomever was speaking at the time, before I had all the facts. As I grew older, it became apparent that the lesson they were teaching was not to be quiet but to listen instead. Listening is a very hard thing to master, we all hear but I find most of us really never listen.

Introduction
Watching technology combine and condense is really fascinating, especially in my line of work. When I'm not reviewing or being a husband/wife, I work as a sleep technologist. One of the main conditions that I deal with is sleep apnea. The main treatment for this is continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP. The original CPAP machines that were built used modified vacuum motors and were gigantic. They remained loud and big until around the mid 90s, when they became more mainstream. Humidifier chambers used to be a separate setup and now they are built into the machines. The popularity pushed the technology and now there are machines that can literally fit in the palm of your hand, with a built in humidifier. They are also so quiet that you get more noise from the mask vents, and your breathing, than from the machine itself.

One of the larger questions for tech companies going into fourth quarter earnings revolved around hard drive shortages and whether the supply chain could adapt after flooding in Thailand.
Answering that question is still fairly tricky. Why? There were no uniform trends. Some companies thrived and a few struggled. Seagate was a clear winner. Western Digital held up better than expected. Meanwhile, other companies such as Sony—a financial basket case to start with—flopped.
The takeaway here is that October’s flooding in Thailand continues to whack the technology industry. But the impact is far from uniform.
Here’s a tour of how the Thailand flooding affected three tech giants....

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today officially asked all parties involved in the Megaupload criminal case to refrain from deleting any data stored on servers once leased by the file-hosting service—and it suggested it was willing to sue over the matter.
In a letter (PDF) sent to the Eastern Virginia US Attorney's office and to lawyers for Megaupload, the EFF asks for all material on the servers to be retained "both for purposes of contemplated future litigation and as a matter of obligation and courtesy to the innocent individuals whose materials have unfortunately been swept up into this case."

Introduction
So who else has fallen into a Skyrim addiction this winter? I received a copy for Christmas, but it was for the XBOX 360, not the PC. In a way, I am kind of glad my wife made that mistake. Being a new father, and a 3rd shifter, I've been on night duty to watch my daughter. A console copy meant that I could multitask and play while my daughter slept on my chest. A PC copy would have meant having to sit in the office with constant back and forth running whenever there was a fuss. Needless to say, I was able to beat just about everything rather quickly, and moved on without a long term addiction.

Introduction
Technology moves at the blink of an eye and component upgrade cycles occur much faster for PC enthusiasts compared to other hobbies. Those who want the fastest and the best often find themselves spending thousands of dollars on motherboards, processors, video cards, memory and storage just to keep up with the latest trend. Thankfully, there are some components that can be used through several system life cycles, especially when chosen carefully. For example, a highly efficient power supply can last several years, considering power requirements will only lessen with future technologies and power supply form factors will remain static for a while. A spacious and durable chassis is also a worthy investment, for it requires very little "upgrades" in order to house the latest and upcoming PC components. Lastly, an effective CPU heatsink with dedicated manufacturer support in the face of ever-changing motherboard mounting sockets could pretty much last long enough to be passed on to your children.

Not a hat or a map, something big this way comes

Although things are still far quieter than we'd like on the Half-Life front, Valve is continuing to toil away at new content for its insanely popular multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2.
According to a short post on the TF2 Blog, the Half-Life, Portal and Left 4 Dead developer is working on a "secret project... for 2012."
Before you dismiss this as just another new hat or something equally insignificant, Valve has said "it isn't a hat, it isn't a map." Beyond that, all it is saying is "it's really cool".

AMD Strategy Transformation Brings Agile Delivery of Industry-Leading IP to the Market
Product Roadmap Enhancements Illustrate Plans to Accelerate Growth in Low Power, Emerging Markets and Cloud Computing; First System-on-a-Chip (SoC) Solutions Expected to Arrive in 2013
SUNNYVALE, Calif. —2/2/2012
At its annual Financial Analyst Day, AMD (NYSE: AMD) detailed a new “ambidextrous” strategy that builds on the company’s long history of x86 and graphics innovation while embracing other technologies and intellectual property to deliver differentiated products.
AMD is adopting an SoC-centric roadmap designed to speed time-to-market, drive sustained execution, and enable the development of more tailored customer solutions. SoC design methodology is advantageous because it is a modular approach to processor design, leveraging best practice tools and microprocessor design flows with the ability to easily re-use IP and design blocks across a range of products.

Motherboard vendors including Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology, in response to increases in the international price of copper and labor costs in China, are expected to hike their prices by about 10% as early as the end of the first quarter of 2012, according to industry sources.
Motherboard prices were hiked by 5-10% in early 2011 to reflect increased material costs and the impact of labor shortages, and by 3-8% in April 2011 due to increased costs of some components arising from the earthquake hitting northeastern Japan in March, the sources indicated.
