Western Digital announced the WD Red Line series of 3.5 SATA hard drives, optimized for both the home and small office NAS systems. The new WD Red Line series of drives are designed to integrate affordable and seamlessly with entry level network storage systems with improved performance and reliability. Previously users had to choose from desktop or high-end server drives for home for NAS systems which was not a very cost effective solution. The WD Red HHDs are currently available now in 1 TB -$109.00 USD, 2 TB - $139.00 USD, and the 3 TB drive is $189.00 USD. More information about WD Red hard drives can be found in the press release.

These look like some pretty sweet drives from WD. Stick 2 or 3 of these in a NAS and you would be pretty set for storage for a bit.

Yep I am glad to see WD to this too, and it does look like the choices got better to choose the right type of HD for an affordable NAS.The comments from some of the Launch partners are good enough for me.

I agree, I saw a Netgear ReadyNAS today bundled with WD red drives and they seem pretty excited about this.

I'll wait to see how they do as far a being reliable but I hope they're solid drives. I'd like to get a few.

These might be a good choice for external drives as well.

Looks like they have 3 year warranty and are optimized for NAS systems

The Reds are optimized for the NAS environment ,,rather than the Blacks for performance which also draws more power ,the Reds are easier to integrate and may have better support.
